Here's a good quote...
This quote comes from an extensive section on the "Theological Scene Today" of the chapter entitled "The Method of Theology" in Millard J. Erickson's book Christian Theology. In the immediate context of "contemporizing the Christian message" (Erickson, by saying "contemporizing," means putting it "in the context of the present time" [23]) and trying to at the same time maintain a far enough distance so as not to have to change your message every generation this analogy may be found: "It is good not to have too much looseness in a mechanical device, since this leads to excessive wear. But if the mechanism is tightened too much, there may not be enough play to allow for normal movement of the parts, and they may snap" (68).
I post this, not simply to have something to post, or b/c of its good relation to developing a theology, but because it's very applicable to more than just the creation of personal statement of doctrine.
